I don’t believe in unforgivable sins. A decent person can redeem her or himself following even the most heinous act. S/he only need show reflection and contrition, and behave honestly in the present. Reparations may be appropriate. More than anything, though, openness and acceptance of responsibility are necessary.
Brett Kavanaugh, with his implausible, incredible categorical denials – which surely rose to the level of overt lies -renders himself unfit for his current job, let alone the one for which he has been nominated.
It’s not his history of bad behavior that disqualifies him, to my mind. It’s his arrogant, dismissive relationship to it, to the people it may have affected, and the truth.
