Some years ago, a voicemail that Alec Baldwin left for his daughter was made public.
At the time, I wasn’t impressed. Parents lose their tempers all the time. So do kids. And we all say things that, later, we come to regret. Or not, even.
And then, Dan Savage did a little rant on This American Life about it. My favorite line?
I talked to other parents, but they all said the same thing. They’ve said worse. They’ve lost it. Someone told me recently about one father– a loving father, a good father– who told his son, “I could kill you, and make another one, just like you.”
This resonated to me. As a son, as a father. My parents said awful things to me. And they were, honestly, good parents. I’ve said awful things to my son. And I’m, honestly, a good father.
But then, a week or so ago, I read this article in the Times.
Now, I’m not a theater guy, and I”m not a star fucker. But: a) this shit is FUNNY, and b) what a collection of assholes. Especially Baldwin.
Just sayin’.
I don’t want you to kill me, but I would like to watch you make another just like me.
