I wrote a post about Charlie Kirk. I posted it. I deleted it.
Fascism is scary.
Bottom line: I didn’t like Charlie Kirk. I’m pretty sure that’s ok. I’m pretty sure it’s ok not to like someone.
I’m opposed to murder. And, if you ranked the entire global population in order of whom I least would like to see murdered, he would have been very close to the bottom of that list. For me. And I think that’s ok. If everyone had such a list that would be fine. We all get to like some people more than others, to value some people’s lives more than others.
Still, I do wish he were alive. Not least – but not only – because the fascists are using his death as a weapon.
That said: I’m not entirely convinced Kirk wasn’t Hitler 2.0. If Hitler had been killed in 1929, I suspect I would have felt much like I feel today. Which isn’t to say Kirk was Hitler. Only to say, if he was, his death probably is good.
Which, I think, we all can agree on. (Do we all agree the world would be better had Hitler been assassinated in 1929? I think, honestly, most of us do.)
And? Still? No one should be killed.
I’m very comfortable saying a) I loathed him, b) I wish he hadn’t been killed, and c) it’s the mother-fucking fascists who are making thoughtful discussion like this impossible.
I rarely watch Jimmy Kimmel. Or Stephen Colbert. But. Their cancellation is a much bigger social and political disaster than is the very unfortunate murder of the loathsome, hateful Charlie Kirk.
Fascism is here.
