I just saw “Baby Driver” for the second time in two weeks.

I’m not, by any stretch, a film buff. As with almost all things I enjoy, my enjoyment of film is atheoretical, relatively pure and uninformed either by history or by prejudice: I like what I like, and don’t spend all that much time interrogating my likes – and, to the extent I do interrogate my likes, I do so with a view toward understanding myself, not toward criticizing.

“Baby Driver” feels unique to me, in its melding together of the crime/chase movie, the road movie, and the movie musical. Unfortunately, its sexual politics (it would be, truly, generous, to refer to the female characters in the film as “two-dimensional”) are a huge drag.

Still….

You should see it.

Here’s the first scene, an awesome chase. The next scene – in which the protagonist, Baby, buys four cups of coffee, is three times better, but I can’t find it on YouTube.

  1. I agree! I’m so excited by this movie and have been listening to the soundtrack on repeat since Saturday. I love how the songs remind me of different scenes.

  2. I have been fascinated by the coffee scene. I can’t wait to rewatch it.

Say something! (I just did....)
