I remember Paris

Just over fifteen years ago, New York, and the world, suffered a wrenching calamity. Tonight, it happened again.

I’m made despondent, even more than by the tragic loss of life, by the incredible poverty and lack of creativity, or strategy, of our collective leaders’ responses. Rather than respond to the reality – that the world is a safer place than it’s ever been, that attacks like these are anomalies, that there’s never been a better time to be a human – and, to the tactics of those who attack – fear, after all, is their goal – our leaders play into their hands.

You don’t read me for my politics, and I won’t bore you with them.

But my heart goes out to all those who’ve suffered losses tonight, and to all of us, who surely will pay, not at the hands of those who attacked, but at the hands of those who would have us believe they defend us.
